Get involved as a business or a potential supplier

How do I get involved – as a business or a potential supplier?

There are dozens of local and not-so-local businesses involved in the Festival and we would be delighted to hear from you if you are keen to supply equipment or services at a particularly competitive rate.

If you are interested in promoting your business through the Festival, please contact us – letting us know what your company does and how you’d ideally like to promote yourselves. Depending on your intentions and what is suitable, we would normally request a reasonable fee towards the costs of running the Festival.

This year, we are also aiming to distribute a brochure to visitors with details of the Festival line-up and useful information included and there would be space to advertise. If this is of interest, please let us know.

If you are able to sponsor aspects (or the entirety) of the event, we can offer attractive benefits in return for cash or in-kind support. Please note that we will begin to promote this Festival in the spring and so the sooner you contact us the more benefits can be reaped by association.

With any of the above, in the first instance, the best thing to do is to contact the Events team by email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. We look forward to hearing from you.

Get involved as a charity

How do I get involved – as a charity?

As a council-run festival, we have limited opportunities for charities to get involved and the main focus is usually on the Mayor’s charities which can change each year. However, if you are particularly keen and feel that you can offer an activity that will engage adults (and not just collect money) then please do email us at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to discuss ideas.

Get involved as a performer or simply to run an activity

How do I get involved – as a performer or simply to run an activity?

The vast majority of performers and other creative people involved in the Festival contact us via our ‘Activity Proposal’ process. If you are a band, apply here to 'Play at The Fling' and we will give you a listen! The Proposal forms are now available for you to complete. We’re always delighted to hear from talented local (or even less local) people who would like to inspire people at The Fling Festival - the only event of its kind in the UK.

Get involved as a trader or a caterer

How do I get involved – as a trader or a caterer?

‘Caterer & Trader’ application forms are now available for you to complete. These forms relate to trading at The Fling and The 3foot People Festival (the latter three-day festival takes place on the same site earlier in the week). Note that standard terms and conditions and pitch fees will apply if you are selected to trade at one or both festivals. Please click here for the application form and further information.

Help make the event happen – working behind-the-scenes

How do I get involved to help make the event happen – working behind-the-scenes?

Every year a small, dedicated team of staff work on the Festival – which can be hard work but extremely rewarding. The Fling is a community-focused event and is only possible with the support of local people. If you’d like to explore what opportunities are available at either this Festival or others devised and managed by the council each year, then please get in touch at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Volunteers enjoy free entry and time-off to the Festival and other perks - and we always look after anyone keen to put something back into the community. If you’re willing to work as a volunteer, please visit http://www.chelmsford.gov.uk/help-us-make-Chelmsford-even-more-vibrant-city

How about running my own community event, where do I start?

How about running my own community event, where do I start?

Firstly – great stuff! There are many helpful, useful (and sometimes scary!) guides out there to help you put on your own event. The Government has just released a manual: The ‘Can Do’ guide to running and organising voluntary and community events. This can be found here, but if you’d like any other advice please contact the council.
